Description
Fascinating collection of papers presented to the House Of Commons on 7th May 1860, concerning the practice of quarantining ships on medical grounds in Mediterranean ports. This was increasingly viewed by the Government as a hindrance or restraint of trade, rather than a medical necessity. Includes reports from HM Consuls across the region, many with statistics on shipping and disease, as well as much information on local conditions and practices. This is followed by correspondence on the matter between Lord John Russell, then at the Foreign Office, Sir Henry Bulwer, and others. Much used as a source, but difficult to find an original copy thus. Stock lightly toned, but otherwise all in VG order with just the occasional mark. Title cover sheet, bound to rear and a little grubby. Largely English language, but some reports in French and Italian. Now attractively rebound in blue paper-covered boards with white paper to spine and paper title label to upper board. Folio. [2] 104pp [1]
