Exceptionally scarce first edition of Whitehead's masterwork. Dated differently on engraved first title (1833) and main title page (1834). 15 of 16 engravings by Messrs Bagg. Chapters on 71 notables of the title throughout English history including much in second volume about pirates. Both volumes disbound, but boards present. Base of spine on vol 1 heavily torn, but title block intact. Candidates for sympathetic rebinding. Internally in good order with browning to page edges commensurate with age. Title pages only heavily spotted. 348 (+ads) and 384pp.
