Description
Sammelband of four plays popular in the 18th century, as performed at the Theatres Royal Drury Lane and Covent Garden. Volume includes The Fair Penitent, a tragedy, by Nichols Rowe (Sabine And Son, ND. c.1777); Cato, A Tragedy, by Joseph Addison (Sabine And Son, ND); The Siege Of Damascus, A Tragedy, by John Hughes (C. Bathurst, et al, 1777); The Merchant Of Venice, A Comedy, by William Shakespeare (J Barker, 1794). All are as performed at the Theatres Royal, with appropriate cast lists. The Siege and The Merchant have engraved frontispieces and are "marked with variations of the Manager's Book" and "regulated from the prompt-books, by permission of the managers" respectively. All in generally good internal order. Some outbreaks of foxing, occasionally severe. The Sabine editions are printed on poor stock, the others better. The Siege Of Damascus has lines deleted in pencil , presumably for performance. All bound in well worn but not unattractive half leather with marbled paper-covered boards. 12mo. 48, 48, 68 [2], 64pp
