Scarce first edition of Whitehead's masterwork. Dated differently on engraved first title (1833) and main title page (1834). 15 of 16 engravings by Messrs Bagg. Chapters on 71 notables of the title throughout English history including much in second volume about pirates. Both volumes have been attractively but simply rebound in blue paper-covered boards with cream paper and title labels to spines. Internally in good order with toning to page edges commensurate with age. Title pages only heavily spotted. 348pp (+ads) and 384pp.
