Description
Most unusual publication resulting from a competition set by the editor of the Birkenhead News to guess the six most able and useful members of the Town Council. The resulting sextet (Councillor William Laird JP; Alderman Charles Willmer; Alderman Frederick Smith; Councillor Thomas Samuel Deakin; Councillor John Laird; and Alderman Edward Mills) are profiled here with an engraved portrait of each and a biography. Exceptionally scarce and, it appears, not held in any library collections. Bar light toning and a little spotting to endpapers, all in good internal order, with portraits showing well. However front hinge is split and block is loosening, so to be treated with care. Endpapers advertise Birkenhead businesses. Bound in red cloth with gilt decoration and titling, this rather worn and dulled to edges and bumped. Folio, 57pp + ads.
